The application process

In Applying, Projects, Students on June 22, 2011 by georgina Tagged:

We’ve received a great response with many enquiries and applications being submitted. Some students have clearly thought very hard about how they can effect change in their communities with a project, there’s been some excellent submissions

There’s been a few questions about the process as well, so here is a short list to clarify some points:

  1. You must be intending to undertake study for you first undergraduate degree
  2. Ahdaf will support young people who have not attended university before and may consider students who are enrolled and in their first year
  3. You must be studying at a university in the West Bank or Gaza
  4. We only pay tuitions fees: not travel, registration or anything else
  5. You have to run a project for the duration of their studies: this means you need to look at your community and think about what you can do to make it a better place for everyone. Or, you could volunteer at a local organisation. But you need to think about how you can make a positive contribution to your community
  6. You must fill out the entire application form. Incomplete forms will be rejected

We’ll accept applications until July 25th.  Don’t be concerned if you don’t hear from us immediately. Ahdaf pays no staff and is run solely by volunteers, so it takes a while to process everything. This year we hope to select six students to receive support for the entirety of their degree.

Community projects

In Applying, Projects, Students on February 14, 2010 by georgina Tagged: , , ,

When we founded Ahdaf we realised that we wanted to do more than just help students in need access higher education. We saw that we also had an opportunity to build and strengthen communities: the community is the foundation on which a vibrant and engaged civil society is built.

So we decided that every student Ahdaf supports must do something where they live which helps members of their community. We thought about some of the activities that might be helpful. Here’s a few of them:

  • teaching English at a UN school
  • helping establish a needlework group
  • producing youth group video diaries
  • providing computer coaching to children or retraining adults with new skills
  • setting up a sports team
  • a Nakba history project
  • local land use documentation projects
  • working with disabled people
  • setting up youth theatre programmes
  • running play sessions in orphanages
  • helping to restore historic or religious buildings
  • volunteering at local organisations
  • running adult literacy groups
  • planting a public garden

We want you to think about the types of activities you can establish, with no cost other than your time and enthusiasm. Strong projects should encourage partnership and relationship building within the local community. What will make a difference where you live?

In 2008 Ahdaf supported high school students from a Lebanese refugee camp, paying for their final exams. To raise the funds, Jamal and John cycled from London to Brighton. It rained.
